The Mohawk women’s fastball team suffered its 15th straight loss, but certainly gave the first place St. Clair Saints a fright in the final game of the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association regular season.
The Mountaineers dropped a 6-5 decision to the 14-1 Saints in Windsor on Thursday (Oct. 10). Mohawk even had the tying run on base in the top of the seventh inning, but couldn’t cash her in.
Skyler-Dawn Patteson was the winning pitcher for St. Clair and helped herself by driving in three runs. She and teammate Allison Telfer each homered off losing pitcher Laura Chappel, who went the distance, but Patteson was replaced with one out in the seventh inning. It marked the only time this season that the Mountaineers drove an opposing pitcher from the game, according to Mohawk head coach Brian Weller, who said his team played a fantastic game.
He said Chappel pitched very well, even in defeat, as St. Clair got all of its runs by the fourth inning and none after that.
Jennifer VanDyk had a pair of RBI for the Mountaineers. Nicole Leitch and Alexis Collins each had two hits.
