They needed extra time, but the Mohawk women’s soccer team defeated Conestoga Condors, 1-0, in their qualifier in Kitchener on Saturday (Oct. 12) and earned a berth in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association quarter-finals.
Rachelle DeJong (Ancaster) scored the game winner for the Mountaineers in the 100th minute after the two teams battled goalless through the regulation 90 minutes.
“We played really well,” said Mohawk co-head coach Michael Castellani. “We controlled most of the game and tired them out. Olivia Pavoni (Sault Ste. Marie) played a great game in the middle, effectively neutralizing their midfield. Nicole Roberts (Ancaster) made three superb saves.”
The Mountaineers advance to play the Seneca Sting in the quarter-final on Saturday (Oct. 19) at 7:30 p.m. in North York. The winner advances to the OCAA championship at Sheridan College the following weekend.
