Shootout spells demise for Bulldogs

Goaltender Robert Mayer did all he could to ensure his Hamilton Bulldogs teammates could chalk up their second American Hockey League victory in as many nights, but it wasn’t enough.

Mayer stopped 38 of 41 shots he faced but the Bulldogs lost a 4-3 shoot-out decision to the Grand Rapids Griffins on Saturday night (Oct. 12) at Copps Coliseum.

Griffins’ forward Gustav Nyquist shoot-out goal, his second of the night, and only counter after overtime, gave the Griffins the win before a weak crowd of 3,416.

Hamilton’s hopes for a win to follow the Bulldogs’ season opening win on Friday night, came with goaltender Robert Mayer on the bench for an extra attacker. Forward Akim Aliu scored with 11 seconds to play in regulation time to force overtime. But five Bulldogs shooters could not beat netminder Petr Mrazek, who claimed the win after stopping 21 of 24 shots.

And for the second straight night, Bulldogs’ defenceman Greg Pateryn opened the scoring in the first period, this time with a rip from the point. The goal was Hamilton’s first power play marker of the season.

Grand Rapids replied midway through the second period when Nyquist beat Mayer.

Just as quickly as the Griffins tied things up ’Dogs forward Sven Andrighetto put Hamilton ahead again, 2-1, just 18 seconds later.

Late in the second, with Andrighetto in the penalty box for high sticking, Grand Rapids’ forward Calle Jarnkrok tied things.

Grand Rapids took the lead with their second power play goal of the game in the third period when forward Jeff Hoggan squeaked an off-the-post rebound past Mayer.

Hamilton’s next game is Friday, October 18th, when they travel to Cleveland to take on the Lake Erie Monsters at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs next home game will be played on Tuesday, October 22nd at 7:30 p.m. when the Rockford IceHogs come to Copps Coliseum.
