CLEVELAND – Hamilton Bulldogs forward Nick Tarnasky notched two third period goals less than four minutes apart to get his club to overtime, but three shootout goals by Lake Erie gave the Monsters a 3-2 American Hockey League win on Friday night (Oct. 18).
For the Bulldogs it was their second straight shootout loss and left them with a 1-0-0-2 win-loss-OT loss-SO loss record.
Lake Erie Monsters forwards Mike Sgarbossa, Bryan Lerg and Joey Hishon scored in the showdown after overtime settled nothing.
Forward Brad Malone paced the Monsters with two goals, his third and fourth of the season.
Malone was credited with the first goal of the night at 18:15 of the first period when he fired the puck to the front of the Bulldogs net from the corner and it bounced in off Hamilton defenceman Magnus Nygren.
Malone struck again at 7:02 of the second period, this time shorthanded, when he ripped a wrist shot past Bulldogs goaltender Dustin Tokarski.
The Bulldogs managed just nine shots on goal through the first two periods, but stormed back in the third, outshooting the Monsters 14-4 in the final frame.
Tokarski made 24 saves on 26 shots in defeat, while Lake Erie goaltender Sami Aittokallio made 23 saves on 25 shots in the victory.
Hamilton went 1-for-6 on the power play, while Lake Erie went 1-for-4.
Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Sunday (Oct. 20), when they travel to Toronto to take on the Toronto Marlies at 7:30 p.m. The Bulldogs next home game will be played on Tuesday (Oct. 22) at 7:30 p.m. when the Rockford IceHogs come to Copps Coliseum
