Mac unable to grab Rams by the horns in volleyball

The McMaster women’s volleyball team can’t seem to get past the Ryerson Rams. After beating the Marauders in the final of McMaster’s own tournament the week prior, the Toronto school knocked off the Maroon, 3-1, in the Ontario University Athletics opener at the Burridge Gym on Saturday (Oct. 19).

Instead of looking to administer some payback on the Rams, the Maroon started the match very flat and allowed Ryerson to jump in front 9-4 in the first set. It was 16-8 at the technical timeout as the Marauders struggled with their serve reception and therefore couldn’t generate any offense and Ryerson closed out the set 25-13.

It was a different Marauder team that started the second set, getting in front 6-1 and forcing Ryerson into an early timeout. The Mac momentum continued through the set with the margin 16-5 at the technical timeout and the Marauders took the set 25-16 to even the match.

The third set proved critical as McMaster continued to carry the play and held a 16-12 lead at the technical timeout. With the Marauders leading 19-17, Ryerson capitalized on poor passing by the Marauders and grabbed the lead at 21-20. The teams traded points from that point but Ryerson took the set 25-23 to grab a 2-1 lead in sets.

Now trailing the match, McMaster slumped from the lost opportunity and got down in the early stages of the fourth set. Looking for a spark Mac tinkered with its lineup and the Marauders closed to a single point at 10-9. Ryerson then stepped up its play and took a 16-10 lead into the technical timeout, and McMaster failed to respond dropping the set 25-16 and the match 3-1.

The Marauders will now head out on the road to play Windsor and Western on Oct. 25 and 26, before returning to the Burridge Gym to Play Toronto on Nov. 2.
