Badminton coach encouraged by tourney result

Badminton“The 2013-2014 badminton season started out with a bang.”

Those words came from Mohawk assistant coach Jay Barrientos, who added, following the Humber Cup Invitational in Etobicoke Oct. 18-19, “(It) left a mark that hasn’t been seen in my last four years with the program. The team has certainly caught the eyes of all the colleges and did not disappoint with their play over the weekend.”

Here are the results for the Mountaineers:

Men’s Singles

Bert Miciano, Kianoosh Moslemi, and Adam D’Agostino all qualified for the quarter-finals in A-Flight while Nikhil Mutagar was a B-Flight semi-finalist.

Women’s Singles

Victoria Hall was an A-Flight semi-finalist and Kim Lim made the A-flight quarters.

Tina Tran qualified for the round of 16 in her first tournament and Eikcaj Navarro turned in a spirited effort in the B-flight round of 16.

Men’s Doubles

A-Flight: D’Agostino and Moslemi were quarter-finalists.

B-Flight: Miciano and Mutagar advanced to the quarters while Behrouz Askari and Andrew Tran reached the round of 16.

Women’s Doubles

Victoria Hall and Kim Lim were A-Flight finalists.

In B-Flight: Jazmine Hogeveen and Navarro made the round of 16 while Tran and Tallia Bezemer got to the quarters.

Mixed Doubles

Moslemi and Hall were A-Flight finalists.

Mutagar and Trana advanced to the B-Flight quarter-finals.

“All rookies have shown a great deal of heart in all of their matches throughout the weekend, from the men to the great showing from the women’s side,” said Barrientos.
