Marauders’ Phillips had a field day in lacrosse

The Pita Pit Athletes of the Week for the week of Oct. 14-20 are men’s lacrosse player Mark Phillips, and Hailey Milligan of the women’s basketball team.

Phillips, a fourth-year attacker, scored 10 goals during two weekend games to finish the regular season fifth among Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association players.

He contributed half of the Marauders’ production on Friday, as McMaster edged the Laurier Golden Hawks, 10-9, to seal a playoff spot. He scored five again on Sunday, but was unable to guide McMaster past Guelph, as the Marauders lost 14-8.

Phillips total of 31 goals this season doubles his production of last season.

Milligan, a fifth-year centre, was McMaster’s steadiest contributor on both offence and defence this past weekend, as the Marauders advanced to the final at Ryerson’s Darcel Wright Memorial Classic.

She averaged 13 points and seven rebounds over the course of three games, following her nine-point and two-rebound performance in McMaster’s 65-40 win over Calgary with a double-double (16 points, 10 boards) in a 65-50 victory over the host Rams. Milligan finished the tournament with 15 points and eight rebounds in McMaster’s 59-52 loss to the Saskatchewan Huskies in Sunday’s tournament final.
