Shannon Connolly and Alexis Georgakopoulos of St. Thomas More each scored a goal during the first five minutes to lift the Knights to a 2-1 victory over the Cardinal Newman Cardinals at the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association championship field hockey game on Tuesday (Oct. 22).

Defensively, the first-place Knights got a pair of outstanding saves by goalkeeper Venus Orig late in the second half to preserve the lead at McMaster’s Alumni Field.

Selena Szura scored for Newman eight minutes into the second half.

Both More and Newman advance to Wednesday’s Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference playoffs. More will take on Burlington’s Nelson Lords (1:30 p.m. at More) while Newman faces the Halton champion Oakville Trafalgar Red Devils (3:30 p.m. at Bronte Field) in the other semi-final.

Winners of both GHAC semi-finals advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations tournament, Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Kitchener-Waterloo.

After receiving an opening-round playoff bye, the Knights (5-1) eliminated the St. Mary Crusaders 1-0 in HWCAA semi-final action. Newman finished second in the standings with a record of 4-2. The Cardinals then blanked the Cathedral Gaels, 4-0, and the Bishop Ryan Celtics, to qualify.

In their regular-season meeting, the Knights topped the Cardinals, 3-1, on Sept. 25.

The GHAC championship is scheduled for Thursday at 3 p.m. in Halton.
