Fisher and partner advance in world racquetball


Racquetball5Sucre, Bolivia – Annie Fisher of Burlington and Alexis Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta., defeated Valentina Valor and Lilian Zea of Venezuela, 15-3, 15-14, in U14 doubles at the International Racquetball Federation Junior World Championships on Wednesday (Oct. 23).

The team has two games remaining in their doubles round robin bracket.

In the U14 singles event, Iwaasa was down one game against Maria Jose Munoz, but then took control of the match to win the next two games, 15-8, 11-5. Iwaasa, who is ranked eighth will need to be on top of her game in the quarter-final where she plays top seeded Ana Gabriela Martinez of Guatemala.

Meanwhile, other Canadians won their elimination round matches to advance to the quarters.
In the U18 singles event, Anthony Schonberger of New Westminster, B.C. defeated Junior Rodriguez of the Dominican Republic with scores of 15-14, 15-5. Schonberger, who is seeded fifth in the elimination round, will move on to the quarterfinals where he will face fourth seed Diego Crespo of Bolivia.

Coby Iwaasa of Lethbridge, Alta. won his U16 singles match against Arturo Acevedo of Columbia, 15-3, 15-12. Iwaasa, seeded No. 1, will play ninth seed Alexander Pirie of Costa Rico in the quarterfinals.

Also in the U16 singles event Nicholas Bousquet of Valleyfield, Que. defeated Eliseo Molina of Venezuela, 15-3, 15-6. Bousquet, who is seeded third, will meet sixth seed Rodrigo Montoya of Mexico in the quarterfinals.

In the U16 girls singles, Danielle Drury of Saskatoon, Sask. defeated Kaitlin Simmons (USA) 15-5, 15-4. Drury, who is seeded sixth, will advance to the quarterfinals to play third seed Hawira Rojas of Bolivia.

Michele Morissette of Baie Comeau, Que. had a disappointing loss today in the girls U16 event to Andrea Martinez of Guatemala. Morissette, who is seeded eighth, won the first game 15-13 but ninth seed Martinez took the next two games with scores of 15-11 and 11-6 to win the match.
