Two signings bring experience to McCoys’ roster

mccoysLeft-winger Blair Stayzer and defenceman Simon Mangos are the latest additions to the Dundas Real McCoys as they prepare for the start of Allan Cup Hockey.

This season the McCoys are hosts for the national championship of senior hockey, the Allan Cup Tournament, in April.

Stayzer, a six-foot, three-inch, 207-pound forward, is an 11-year veteran of the East Coast, Central, International and Eastern International hockey leagues. He played part of the 2001-02 season with the American Hockey League Saint John Flames.

During his career, the 33-year-old native of Welland appeared in 421 regular season games, scoring 41 goals and assisting on 77 others for 118 points. He amassed 1,152 minutes in penalties during that time. Stayzer was selected by Calgary Flames in Round Seven (190th overall) in the 1999 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

“Blair has worked hard this summer to get in shape to help us make a run for the title this year. His experience, size, and presence will be a big component in our success. He wanted to play for us last season, but the work involved in training to become a paramedic made that impossible,” said Ron Bernacci, director of hockey for the McCoys.

Defence wins championships and the McCoys have made several additions to an already competent staff with the addition of such players as Ryan Crane and Dave Bowman.

Dundas has now added five-foot, 10-inch, 183-pound defenceman Mangos from Cambridge. Following his graduation from Ferris State University, he played 430 games in the East Coast, Elite Ice (Europe) and Central hockey leagues where he scored 68 goals, assisted on 173 other scoring plays for 241 points. He had 271 minutes in penalties.

“Simon will definitely provide depth and experience on defence for our Allan Cup run. He comes with great recommendations and is eager to join our blueline staff. He will be a nice fit for what we need on the back end this year,” said Bernacci of the Caledonia native.

On Friday night (Oct. 25) at 8 p.m. the Real McCoys will hold an open scrimmage game in the JL Grightmire Arena on Market Street. Admission is free of charge.
