Kyle McQuade and Nathan Pageau scored three goals each but it wasn’t enough as the new-entry Stoney Creek Generals lost their Allan Cup Hockey home opener, 7-6, to the Norwood Vipers on Sunday (Oct. 27).
That setback left the Generals with a 1-1 record after their season-opening 4-3 victory the previous night against the Whalers In Welland.
On Sunday at Gateway Ice Centre, Generals netminder Mark Servos faced 40 shots, including 20 in the first period.
Norwood led 3-2 after the opening frame but the Generals fought back to go into the third period 5-5.
A total of 27 penalties, 14 to Stoney Creek, were called.
On Saturday night in Welland, Stoney Creek got goals from McQuade, Jordan Prevost, Tanner Hildebrand, and Matthew Reynolds. Welland replied with goals by DJ Sardella, Curtis Campbell, and Drew Minor.
Generals goalie Servos was busy, facing a barrage of 56 shots while his skaters fired 38 pucks at Rick Miller. Stoney Creek had built a 4-1 lead going into the final period.
In the penalty department, a total of eight infractions were handed out.
The Generals visit the Whitby Dunlops on Saturday (Nov. 2) and their next home game is Sunday, Nov. 10 at Gateway. The opening faceoff is set for 2 p.m.
