Cross country runners off to Sudbury

xc13logoThe 1-2 combination of St. Thomas More’s Alexander Broekhuyse and St. Mary’s Liam Donnelly will lead the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association contingent into Saturday’s (Nov. 2) Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association’s cross-country championships in Sudbury.

Broekhuyse won the recent Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference midget boys’ race, while Donnelly came second in the same 5k event. Their times were 16 minutes, 40 seconds and 16:43, respectively.

Broekhuyse has crossed the finish line first in all four of his races this season.

The Bishop Ryan senior boys’ team will also be competing at OFSAA for a second consecutive year. During the GHAC qualifying meet at the Kelso Conservation Area, Bishop Ryan’s Brad Doering, Luke Sianchuk, David Martin and Joel Merino placed third, fourth, 17th and 32nd, respectively.

Joining them, from BR, will be Adam Sunavsky, who ended up third in junior boys at GHAC over 6 kilometres.

The other HWCAA representative will be Mikayla Hewitt of St. Mary, who finished ninth in junior girls.

At OFSAA, the race distances are as follows: midget boys, 5 kilometres; junior boys, 6k; senior boys, 7k; midget girls, 3k; junior girls, 4k; and senior girls, 5k.
