The St. Clair Saints scored a pair of Ontario Colleges Athletic Association basketball victories over the Mohawk Mountaineers in Windsor Friday (Nov. 1).
The hometown Saints downed the Mountaineers 79-74 in the men’s game. They improve to 2-1 while Mohawk saw its record go to 1-1.
Andrew Cicuttini led Mohawk with 22 points and 12 rebounds. Matt Fennell scored 17 points and had five rebounds while Xzennis Brereton had 13 points and five boards.
The key statistic in the game was from outside the arc, as St. Clair had 15 three-pointers from 31 attempts, while the Mountaineers were a dismal 1-for-18.
The Mountaineers move on to Sarnia Saturday (Nov. 2) where they have a 5 p.m. meeting with the Lambton Lions, who improved to 1-2 by beating Redeemer 75-64 Friday.
Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker said his team expected a tough road test against a good team like St. Clair and that’s what they got. He expects the same from a good Lambton team Saturday.
The Mohawk women were beaten 59-40 at St. Clair. Natalie Fisher had 12 points, while the Browne sisters, Careena and Carissa, each scored seven points.
“We got off to a poor start offensively and just couldn’t get into a rhythm,” said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. “We shot poorly from the floor and free throw line and that cost us. Defensively, I thought we played decent enough to win, but just couldn’t get into transition to get easy baskets.”
The Mountaineer women will meet Lambton in Sarnia Saturday at 3 p.m. The Lions are 0-3 after losing 75-58 to Redeemer Friday.
