The Hamilton Bulldogs bit into the Abbotsford Heat but couldn’t hold on and let a two-goal lead slip away into a 3-2 shootout loss in American Hockey League play on Saturday night (Nov. 2).
Before five minutes had elapsed in the opening frame, the Bulldogs were looking at a 2-0 cushion. But they were held in check for the balance of regulation time. Two second period scores by the Heat set up a scoreless overtime period, which forced the shootout. The Heat won the showdown, 3-0.
The loss left Hamilton with a 5-2-0-3 record while Heat improved to 7-4-0-1. Hamilton still sits on top of the North Division, two points up on the Toronto Marlies.
Scoring for Hamilton were Justin Courtnall and Martin St. Pierre with his third power play goal in two games.
Blair Jones had both Abbotsford goals plus one in the shootout. Also scoring in the shootout were Markus Granlund and Corban Knight.
Robert Mayer made 34 saves for Hamilton while Joni Ortio made 35 saves for the Heat.
The Bulldogs went 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Heat went 1-for-5.
Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Wednesday (Nov. 6) when they travel to Rochester to take on the Americans (AHL affiliate of the Buffalo Sabres) at 7:05 p.m. The ‘Dogs will be back on home ice on Friday (Nov. 8) when Grand Rapids Griffins visit Copps Coliseum.
