The women won, but the men were defeated as Mohawk visited St. Clair in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball Saturday (Nov. 2) in Windsor.
The Mountaineer women dropped the first match, but battled back for a five-set victory over the Saints. The scores were 18-25, 25-11, 25-19, 23-25, 15-5.
Chi Chi Chuks-Mady led Mohawk with 13 kills, one service ace and 13 digs. Julie Gagnon had nine kills, four aces, two stuff blocks and 14 digs.
For St. Clair, Rachel Rivers had 10 kills and 17 digs while Desiree Redding contributed 22 offensive assists and 13 digs.
“Tonight we allowed St Clair to dictate the pace early on, but pulled control back as the match progressed,” said Mohawk head coach Andrew Nicholson. “They have a couple of outstanding rookies, especially their setter Redding, who can make gold out of sand. It was a good two points for us against a hard working team.”
With the victory, the Mountaineers upped their mark to 2-1. It was the first match of the regular season for the Saints.
The news was not so good for the Mohawk men, who bowed to St. Clair in four sets. The Saints won 25-19, 22-25, 25-21, 25-21.
For the Mountaineers, Bryce Marcussen had nine kills, one ace and one block. Trevor McLaughlin also had nine kills and one ace and Marcin Jedrzejewski had eight kills.
For St. Clair, Jason Hernandez produced 18 kills and one block, while Curtis Ioch had seven kills and one block.
Mohawk is now 1-2 and St. Clair is 1-0.
