The Mohawk men’s and women’s basketball teams both scored victories over Lambton Lions in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association action in Sarnia Saturday (Nov. 2).
The Mountaineer men topped the Lions 95-86 after rallying from a 54-46 half time deficit.
Andrew Cicuttini led Mohawk with a double-double of 29 points and 15 rebounds. Matt Fennell had 20 points and five rebounds. Alex Reis scored 19 and added eight boards and Xzennis Brereton contributed 11 points, six rebounds and four assists.
“We are happy to get out of here with a win,” said Mohawk head coach Brian Jonker. “We made significant strides in the second half and it provides a positive feeling about what we can become defensively.”
The Mountaineers are now 2-1, while Lambton is 1-3.
The Mohawk women also improved to 2-1 with a 75-63 verdict over Lambton, now 0-4.
Careena Browne and Ally DeLorenzi had 16 points apiece and Lacey Wolters added 14.
“It was a very choppy game,” said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy.
“The refereeing was extremely poor and inconsistent and there was no flow or pace at all. I was very proud of our girls for overcoming this adversity, especially with the way we closed out the game. We have a lot to clean up though and need to have a good week of practise with a lot of focus to detail.”
