The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic Athletic Association duo of Alexander Broekhuyse and Liam Donnelly each finished in the top 10 at the Ontario high school cross-country championships in Sudbury on Saturday (Nov. 2).
Competing in the midget boys’ 5.2-kilometre race, St. Thomas More’s Broekhuyse came fourth in 18 minutes, 25 seconds. Liam Donnelly of St. Mary ended up 10th in the field of 278 runners. His time was 18:45.
Broekhuyse and Donnelly placed 1-2 at the recent Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championships at Kelso Conservation Area.
In other Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations categories, the Bishop Ryan Celtics were 24th as a team in the 6.9-k senior boys’ division. The BR entry included Brad Doering (63rd), Luke Sianchuk (79th), David Martin (233rd) and Joel Merino (251st).
Individually, Adam Sunavsky of Bishop Ryan finished 71st in the 5.85-k junior boys’ event which had 291 participants.
The 4.2-k junior girls’ race saw Mikaya Hewitt of St. Mary reach the finish line 116th out of 275. Her time was 18:15.
