Marauders defence leads team’s all-star rush

Five members of the Marauder football team were named Ontario University Athletics all-stars on Wednesday (Nov. 6).

Unsurprisingly, McMaster’s vaunted defensive backfield led the team with two first team nods, as senior defensive backs Steven Ventresca (Hamilton) and Mike Daly (Kitchener) graced the first-team defence. Ventresca finished fourth in the conference with four interceptions, and matched his 2012 total with 26.5 tackles this season. Daly finished with an identical tackle total — the fourth-highest among Marauders — to go along with two interceptions and three pass breakups.

Two more Marauders, breakout rookie slotback Dan Vandervoort (Barrie) and kicker Tyler Crapigna (Nepean), were included in the conference’s second-team offence. Vandervoort finished the 2013 season tied for second in OUA with eight touchdown receptions, while catching 31 passes for 594 yards — ranking him eighth among the conference’s receivers in that category.

Crapigna made 16 of 19 field goal attempts in 2013 (84 per cent), placing him second in the conference among kickers with more than 10 attempts.

Linebacker Aram Eisho (Hamilton) was named to the second-team defence after leading the Marauders with 39 solo tackles and 12 assists in 2013. His 45 total tackles ranked eighth in the OUA this season, and Eisho added an interception and a pass breakup.
