Stoney Creek advances to football championship

steelers_footballAfter a sluggish first-half start to their Atom AA contest, a re-charged Stoney Creek Steelers/Braves posted a 53-18 blowout over the visiting Vaughan Rebels in a Central Ontario Minor football League game.

Playing at Ron Joyce Stadium on Sunday (Nov. 3), the undefeated Steelers/Braves and Rebels started a tightly contested match-up with the two teams trading touchdowns in the opening minutes of the game. The Steelers/Braves pulled ahead late in the opening frame to lead 13-6 after one quarter of action.

With the help of some timely special teams the Steelers led 26-12 at the half.

Whatever the coaches said during the intermission must have really registered with the Steelers, as they came out flying in the second half, playing a physical brand of football that the Rebels just couldn’t match. They outscored Vaughan 27-6 to walk away with the win.

Quarterback Josh Omojofo accounted for five touchdowns, four on the ground and one beautiful pass to wide receiver Cameron Sweet in the end zone. Running back Yohan Tshimbalang scored one major as well as running in five extra points, and Jaheim Merrifield had a touchdown to round out the scoring for the Steelers/Braves.

The victory moves the Steelers/Braves into the championship game on Saturday (Nov. 9) against Halton Hills at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 5720 Bathurst Street.
