Ancaster Avalanche threw everything they had at the Caledonia Pro-Fit Corvairs in an effort to end their 19-game winning streak, but fell 4-1 in Golden Horseshoe Conference Junior B hockey action Saturday (Nov. 9) before 542 boisterous fans in the Morgan Firestone Arena.
Goalkeeper Blake Richard was victimized by league scoring leader Connor Murphy 20 seconds into the contest, but rallied the troops to give the Corvairs one of their toughest battles of the season.
The victory extended the league-leading Corvairs winning streak to 20 games. Ancaster sits in fourth place with a record of eight wins, eight losses and five overtime-shootout losses.
In addition to Murphy’s 13th goal of the season, Matt Quilty (powerplay), Cosimo Fontana, and Brooker Muir (powerplay) rounded out the Corvairs scoring. Murphy and Fontana each had a goal and assist. Murphy leads the GHC with 13 goals and 33 assists for 46 points in 20 games. Cody Brown set up two goals.
Cole Nagy on a play set up by Ryan Lewis and Luke Zupan replied for Ancaster at 5:55 of the middle period.
Next action for the Avalanche is in Port Colborne’s West Side Arena against the Pirates on Friday (Nov. 15 )at 7:30 p.m. with a return engagement against the Port Colborne the following night (Saturday) in the Firestone Arena at 7:30 p.m.
Friday marked the ninth birthday of Brandon Bixby, which he celebrated by dropping the ceremonial first puck accompanied by 23 of his friends. Bixby had requested that instead of presents this year he would appreciate donations in his name made to the Canadian Cancer Society. He and his friends raised more than $200 for the Society.
