Marauders have easy night against Thunderbirds

McMasterThe result was never in doubt, as the McMaster Marauders women’s basketball team continued its spotless start to the Ontario University Athletics season with a dominant 70-37 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds on Saturday (Nov. 9).

McMaster (4-0) remains tied atop the OUA West standings with the similarly undefeated Brock Badgers.

Hailey Milligan led the Marauders with 18 points on the night, while adding six rebounds and a block. Danielle Boiago chipped in 15 points, all coming in the second half, and six boards of her own.

The Marauders led from start to finish as the host Thunderbirds struggled from the floor in the opening quarter, hitting just two jump shots to trail 15-4 after 10 minutes.

When Stephanie Truelove made good on a layup with just over five minutes to play in the first half, the Marauders’ lead had ballooned to 16 points – 26-10. McMaster tacked on an 8-0 run in the final minutes, and carried a 37-17 advantage into the break.

With the commanding lead in place, Milligan was rested for much of the second half, seeing just seven minutes of playing time. Algoma played McMaster’s bench to a tighter 20 minutes, but were still handily outscored 33-21 in the half.

Boiago made the most of her 13 minutes on court, draining five of eight field goal attempts and three of five from three-point range en route to a 15-point half.

The Marauders return to action on home court this weekend, as they welcome the Carleton Ravens and Ottawa Gee-Gees to the Burridge Gym on Friday (Nov. 15) and Saturday (Nov. 16) respectively. Both games will get underway at 6 p.m.
