Hamilton’s Harvey makes her point at US fencing Cup


Hamilton’s Eleanor Harvey came away with two medals at the recent United States Fencing Association’s North American Cup in Cleveland.

The 18-year-old Harvey, who competes out of the Toronto Fencing Club, picked up a Silver medal in the Junior Women’s Foil and added a Bronze from the Senior Division 1 Women’s Foil. Competition which took place Nov. 8 to 11.

In total the Canadian fencers won five medals at the NAC in addition to 10 top eight finishes in the very competitive event, one of Canada’s best finishes in recent years.

Also winning a bronze in Senior Women’s Division 1 was Shannon Comerford of Saskatoon. Alanna Goldie and Jerrica Gu both finished top 8 in the Junior event as well.

Canada also had several teams that won medals. The Men’s Epee Team from Ottawa won gold in the Senior Men’s Epee Team event. The team was composed of Marc-Andre LeBlanc, Joseph Wright, Sebastian Schultz and Kerr Hutchinson. The Men’s Sabre Team from Quebec also made the podium, winning bronze in the Men’s Senior Sabre Team event. The team was composed of Cedric Boutet, Fares Arfa, Pascal Lambert and Marc Gelinas.

Other notable results included Shaul Gordon (Vancouver) finishing fifth in Senior Division 1 Men’s Sabre, Marc-Andre Leblanc (Shediac, NB) finishing eighth in the Men’s Individual Epee Senior Division 1 event which had 310 competitors, and Leonora Mackinnon (Kingston, ON) finishing eighth in Junior Women’s Epee.
