Ancaster Avalanche swept their two-game series with the Fort Erie Meteors and ran their winning streak to four games in the Golden Horseshoe Conference Junior B Hockey League.
On Saturday night (Nov. 23), they downed the Meteors 5-3 in the Fort Erie Leisureplex after shutting out Fort Erie 6-0 two nights before in the Morgan Firestone Arena.
Jake Blain, Blake Luscombe, Luke Zupan, and Zach Nieminen connected for a goal and an assist each. Mike Pollice chipped in with the other goal in the road win.
Nieminen led the Avs last Thursday against the Meteors with three goals and two assists giving him seven points in the series.
Ancaster holds down fourth place in the GHC with 12 wins, eight losses, and five overtime-shootout losses for 29 points, while the Meteors are eighth with a record of 4-16-3 in 23 games.
“I’m excited to see us continue to improve as team. We have had a good string of games lately that we needed to win to stay close to the top teams,” said general manager and coach Ryan Kuwabara.
“The guys have been much disciplined in our defensive zone, and they are creating scoring opportunities that we are capitalizing on. We have to stay sharp and focus on each game.
“Thursday we got three quick goals, which gave us some breathing room, but then we got away from our game plan. That allowed Fort Erie to get some quality scoring chances. We have to play a solid 60 minutes if we are going to have success this year.”
Kuwabara noted that on Saturday the club gave up goals while it was man short, and that could have been disastrous. However, the team found a way to get the victory.
Friday night (Nov. 29) Ancaster plays the Port Colborne Pirates in the West Side Arena at 7:30 p.m. before returning home for one of their biggest theme nights of the year, “National Hockey League Night” featuring Hamilton native and former NHLer Steve Staios. Staios will drop the ceremonial first puck and sign autographs. The Buffalo Blades furnish the opposition that night in a 7:30 p.m. faceoff against the Avalanche.
Ancaster Avalanche season ticket flex packs are still available for $150 for adults and $75 for children, students, and seniors. Single game tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children, students, and seniors and may be at the Morgan Firestone Arena.
