Mountaineers hold down second in men’s basketball

mohawk_fennell_featuredThe Mohawk men’s basketball team improved its record to 6-1 with a 94-80 victory over the Humber Hawks at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre Saturday (Nov. 23).

Andrew Cicuttini had a terrific double-double with 30 points and 16 rebounds in the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association contest. Matt Fennell scored 29 points. He was 17-for-17 at the foul line and also had 11 rebounds. Taylor Dowhaniuk also had a double-double with 10 points and 15 boards and added five blocked shots.

“It was a hard fought win,” said Mohawk Head coach Brian Jonker. “I thought we played our best half court defense of the season. It was nice to get a win over a quality opponent. This starts a really tough stretch to finish the first semester. We go to Fanshawe next Friday (Nov. 29) and then home for a match up with Sheridan (Dec. 4).”

Humber fell to 5-3.

The Mountaineers sit in second place in the West Division standings behind 7-0 Sheridan Bruins of Oakville.

The Mountaineer women slipped to 4-3, with a 73-72 setback to Humber. The Hawks upped their mark to 7-1.

Stef Hrymak had 22 points for Mohawk and Ally DeLorenzi added 17.

“It was a tough loss because our kids played with so much grit and courage,” said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. “We were down to six bodies due to injuries and foul trouble, but to the credit of our players, they just wouldn’t quit. I was extremely proud of their effort against one of the top teams in the province. I really believe we will grow from this experience and use it to our advantage in the future,” said Duffy.

Both Mohawk teams are back in action on Nov. 29 when they travel to London to play the Fanshawe Falcons. The Fanshawe men are 5-3 and the women’s team is 6-2.
