Saunders doubles up in OCAA awards


Sheridan Bruins women’s basketball player Shylanda Saunders is this week’s Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Overall Female Athlete. Saunders of Dartmouth, N.S., was a scoring machine in Sheridan’s 58-51 win over previously unbeaten Humber. She was 6-of-11 shooting beyond the arc, and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Saunders totaled 35 points, and was one rebound shy of a double-double for the Oakville school.

Not surprisingly, she was also the OCAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Nov. 24.

Mohawks’ Andrew Cicuttini pulled down the Men’s Basketball Player of the Week honour. The fourth-year forward from Dundas earned a double-double in the Mountaineers’ 94-80 win over Humber on Nov. 23. Cicuttini scored a game-high 30 points (tying his season-high total) for the Hamilton school and contributed a game-high 16 rebounds, including 11 on the defensive side of the court.

OVERALL MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK and MEN”S VOLLEYBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Mathieu Poulin, Fanshawe.

MEN’S TEAM OF THE WEEK: Sault Men’s Basketball. Sault ended its first half of the regular season on a positive note, defeating Cambrian 73-55. It was a true team effort with five different Cougars hitting double digits in scoring. Kojo Afari (Hamilton) earned a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

WOMEN’S TEAM OF THE WEEK: Conestoga Women’s Volleyball

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Kelly Nyhof, Humber. Two-time reigning OCAA player of the year Nyhof of Georgetown) earned a season-high 16 kills, four service aces and 21 points in a key 3-1 road victory at St. Clair. She also contributed a block in the win. Nyhof leads all OCAA players averaging 4.8 points per set.
