McCoys victorious on Smith’s last-second goal

165px-Dundas_Real_McCoysDUNDAS — Veteran centre Nick Smith, with one second remaining in overtime, gave the Dundas Real McCoys a 6-5 victory over the sixth place Welland Whalers Friday night (Nov. 29) in Allan Cup Hockey in the JL Grightmire Arena.

The Whalers entered the game looking for their first win of the season and sporting a record of four losses, an overtime loss and a shootout loss. But they were denied by a tenacious Dundas crew which took possession of fourth place with a record of 3-2-0-0. At Brantford, the Blast edged the Norwood 7-6, dropping the Vipers into fifth place.

Jeff White, with a pair of goals on a powerplay, and then with extra attacker, with less than a minute and a half to play in the third period tied the score at 5-5 setting the stage for Smith’s heroics. Dave Bowman with a powerplay goal and two assists, and Joe Koudys and Justin Davis with single goals rounded out the McCoys scoring. Jerry Galway and Cam Watson had two assists each.

For Welland, Drew Minor scored twice with Curtis Campbell, Chris Downey, and Mike Marquis adding a goal each.

And in off-ice activities, the Real McCoys are going to help make the sure the shoe is on the right foot. The senior A hockey team and

Dundas shoe retailer David Anderson and David William Shoes have teamed up for a shoe drive at the McCoys home game at J.L. Grightmire Arena on Friday, Dec. 6 when the Brantford Blast visit for a 7:30 p.m. affair.

David Williams Shoes has been collecting “gently worn shoes” since November 2010. The program benefits organizations such as the Good Shepherd, the Welcome Inn Community Centre and community assistance organizations.

“The Real McCoys are excited to help support David’s wonderful initiative this season. Everyone is welcome to bring a pair of gently worn shoes to our game. David’s staff will be there to accept them, and ensure they are delivered,” said McCoys president and general manager, Don Robertson.

The same night marks the start of the annual Salvation Army Food Drive which will continue throughout the month of December. Donation barrels will be placed in the front lobby.

Santa Claus comes to town on Friday, Dec. 20 for the McCoys annual Teddy Bear Toss when Dundas plays the Whitby Dunlops at 7:30 p.m.
