It was not a good night for Mohawk’s basketball teams Friday (Nov. 29) as the Fanshawe Falcons won a pair of games.
The Mountaineer men saw their record fall to 6-2 dropping a 79-69 decision in London. Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, Andrew Cicuttini, had 20 points and 22 rebounds. Taylor Dowhaniuk scored 13 points and added five boards. Chavaun Miller-Bennett and Chris Stanhope each had 17 points for Fanshawe, which improved to 6-3 and snapped Mohawk’s five game win string.
“We played a very poor offensive game and were held to our lowest output of the season,” said Mountaineers’ head coach Brian Jonker.
“We need to regroup quickly to play the number one team in the country, Sheridan, on Wednesday night (Dec. 4 at the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre)”
Meanwhile, the Fanshawe women dispatched Mohawk 54-46. Katelyn Arbour scored 12 points and Ally DeLorenzi had nine for the Mountaineers, 4-4 and losers of three straight. For the Falcons, who upped their mark to 7-2 after their fifth win in a row, Larissa McBean scored 19 points and pulled down nine rebounds and Ali Vlasman added 10 points.
“It was a close game all the way through, said Mohawk head coach Kevin Duffy. “We just couldn’t get any momentum going on offense and it cost us. Defensively, I thought we played well enough to win. It’s a tough loss against a very fierce rival.”
Mohawk meets Sheridan at the Braley Centre Wednesday (Dec. 4).
