Redeemer University College Royals’ Eric Heidbuurt scooped the Men’s Volleyball Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday (Dec. 1) in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play.
In a key West Division showdown, Redeemer defeated St. Clair 3-1 and Heidbuurt (Waterdown) came up with his best offensive output of the season. He had a match-high 21 kills and 26 points. That win allowed Redeemer (5-3) to move into a four-way tie for third place along with St. Clair.

OVERALL MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Mike Lucier, Lambton, Men’s Basketball: Third-year forward Mike Lucier (Forest) recorded game-highs with 23 points, 11 rebounds and three steals in Lambton’s 98-79 win over Niagara. Lucier is averaging 17 points per game. Lambton has won three straight and currently sits in a tie for the final playoff position in the OCAA West. Lucier was also the Male Basketball Player of the Week.
OVERALL FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Lauren Kuehni, Canadore, Women’s Volleyball: Canadore won twice in Ottawa to conclude the first half of the regular season. First-year setter Lauren Kuehni (North Bay) was key in both wins, running a very disciplined and consistent offence. After no wins in 2012-13, Canadore is in the playoff hunt with a record of 6-3. She also took the weekly female volleyball player honour.
MEN’S TEAM OF THE WEEK
Algonquin Men’s Basketball: The undefeated Algonquin Thunder became the first OCAA team to reach 10 wins, winning three times in a span of four days with home wins over La Cité, Seneca and Canadore. Fifth-year guard Njuguna Waiganjo (Ottawa) leads the Thunder averaging 21-2 points per game.
WOMEN’S TEAM OF THE WEEK
Seneca Women’s Volleyball: Seneca earned a key 3-1 victory against previously unbeaten Trent on Nov. 30 to move on top of the OCAA East standings with an 8-1 record. It was a balanced effort by the Sting, with Lindsay Ballance (Napanee) earning a team-high 12 points, and three others earning 11 points.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Sandre Bascoe, Algonquin: Sandre Bascoe (Ottawa) recorded a third straight double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in Algonquin’s 75-44 win over Seneca. Bascoe has hit double digits in scoring in six straight games. Algonquin has not lost an OCAA game since Nov. 5, 2011 (47 games).
