Hamilton Catholic has regained the championship at the Hamilton Spectator Classic.
The Catholic squad defeated Halton, 85-73, on Wednesday (Dec. 4) at the St. Thomas More gym to take top honours at the 17th annual girls’ high school all-star basketball showcase event. Halton was the overall winner in 2012.
In the consolation final of the two-day, four-team regional competition, Hamilton Public topped Brant County, 79-35.
Kia Nurse, a guard for the St. Thomas More Knights, led Hamilton Catholic with 24 points in the final. The University of Connecticut-bound star was named the Julie Vesprini Memorial MVP winner.
Sam Pocrnic of Oakville’s Loyola Hawks replied with 20 points for Halton.
Hamilton Public was paced in its victory by the 13 points of Saltfleet District’s Naomi Ashley. Brianna Bovota of the St. John’s College Green Eagles answered with eight points for Brant County.
Hamilton Catholic began play on Monday with a 60-39 victory over Hamilton Public. The other game saw Halton trounce Brant County, 72-44.
The three-point shooting champion was Amira Giannattasio of the St. Mary Crusaders (13).
