Shoot-out sends Bulldogs to five losses in a row

bulldogsHamilton took the West Division-leading Abbotsford Heat to a shootout but in the end the Bulldogs went down to their fifth straight defeat, 3-2, in an American Hockey League game on Sunday (Dec. 22).

Hamilton goaltender Dustin Tokarski made 39 saves to give the Bulldogs a chance but to no avail. Hamilton led twice in the contest at Copps Coliseum.

Scoring for the Heat in regulation time were Dean Arsene and Ben Hanowski. Hamilton got goals from Joonas Nattinen and Joel Chouinard, with his first as a Bulldog.

After a scoreless first period, Nattinen opened the scoring with his fourth of the season at 4:35 of the second period. Heat defenceman Arsene tied the game about five minutes later.

Hamilton regained the lead just over a minute later when Chouinard ripped a slap shot past Abbotsford goaltender Joni Ortio.

The Heat tied the game 2-2 less than five minutes into the third period when forward Hanowski connected.

After a scoreless overtime period, Abbotsford outscored Hamilton 2-0 in the shootout on goals by Markus Granlund and Corban Knight.

Ortio made 32 saves on 34 shots and stopped all three Hamilton shootout attempts.

The Bulldogs and the Heat both went 0-for-4 on the power play.

Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Boxing Day when they will visit the Toronto Marlies at Air Canada Centre at 1 p.m. The ‘Dogs return to Copps Coliseum on Friday, Dec. 27 when they will host the Marlies at 7:30 p.m.
