Facing the top-ranked team in Canada on its home floor was a tough challenge, but the McMaster women’s basketball team went toe-to-toe with the St. Mary’s Huskies before dropping a 65-59 contest at the Thunder Selects Holiday tournament being hosted in Halifax on Sunday (Dec. 29).
The Marauders stayed right with the Canadian Interuniversity Sport No. 1 ranked team for the entire game, trailing 31-30 at halftime and only down three, 43-40, after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, McMaster was able to take a 49-47 lead but the Huskies responded behind some three-point shooting to go up 58-49. The Marauders narrowed the gap to 58-56 but could not come all the way back and fell to the Atlantic University Sports leaders.
The Marauders will now face Acadia in the bronze medal game of the tournament, which will be played on Monday at noon.
