After a heartbreaking defeat, the Mohawk men’s basketball team finished 0-3 at the Maricopa County Holiday Classic in Phoenix Arizona on Monday (Dec. 30). The Mountaineers fell 118-113 in overtime to the South Mountain Community College Cougars of Phoenix in their last game.
The Cougars had forced OT with a three-pointer at the buzzer.
Matt Fennell scored 38 points and added six rebounds to pace Mohawk. Taylor Dowhaniuk had 12 points, 10 rebounds and nine blocked shots. Andrew Cicuttini scored 15 points and added 10 boards and Pat Iavarone had 16 points and six rebounds.
“It is disappointing to have not won a game on the trip,” said Mountaineers’ head coach Brian Jonker. “All three were winnable games but we didn’t take care of the ball and didn’t play with the enthusiasm necessary to win.”
Mohawk will resume Ontario Colleges Athletic Association play at home to Niagara on Jan. 8.
