The Mohawk men scored a comfortable win but the women suffered a tough loss against Conestoga in Ontario Colleges Athletic Association volleyball in Kitchener on Wednesday (Jan. 8).
The Mountaineer men swept the Condors, 25-19, 25-18, 25-18.
Eric Danecke had 13 kills and four stuff blocks for Mohawk, Bryce Marcussen had seven kills, seven blocks and one service ace. Nhat Nguyen contributed four kills, one block and one ace.
“Our execution of both our offensive and defensive systems was the key to our success tonight,” said Mohawk head coach Matt Schnarr. “We followed our game plan extremely well, which allowed us to maintain control of the play. We had solid contribution off the bench from Nhat Nguyen and Jason Mueller. Our only downfall was the enjoyment level. We need to work on enjoying the game and playing with emotion at all times,” said Schnarr.
Mohawk improved to 6-4, while Conestoga dropped to 1-9.
Meantime, the Mohawk women rallied, but ended up on the short end of a five-setter against Conestoga. The scores were 18-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-22, 12-15.
Kristin VanHartingsveldt led the Mountaineers with eight kills, two aces and four blocks. Chi Chi Chuks-Mady had 10 kills, one ace and two blocks.
“Tonight we were just beaten by a more motivated team,” said Mohawk head coach Andrew Nicholson. “Conestoga have won five of their last six and are playing better than us right now. We need a win on Saturday against Sheridan or our playoffs hopes will become slim.”
The Mountaineers record fell to 3-7, while the Condors upped their mark to 6-4.
