Mountain Volleyball has success in weekend tournaments


The Mountain Volleyball Club had a strong start after the holiday break with the MVC 13U Black and 14U Black teams winning Gold and Bronze medals respectively in tournaments.

The 13U Black won Gold at the 13U Challenge Cup-Trillium held in St. Catharines.

The MVC 13U Black team is coached by Peter Stratford of Burlington and Christine Kalata and Kaitlin Mattiozzi of Hamilton. Clinching first place in pool play in straight sets, MVC 13U defeated Waterloo Tigers, 25-7, 25-13, and Niagara Rapids12U 25-14, 25-14. The Blacks advanced to defeat their sister team, MVC 13U Maroon, 25-9, 25-13, to win the quarter-finals.

MVC 13U Black pushed past Burlington Blaze, 25-10, 25-20 in the semi-finals and defeated rival Guelph Grizzlies in straight sets, 25-21,26-24, for the Gold medal.

The MVC 13U Maroon team defeated the Niagara Rapids, 25-21, 25-13, to finish seventh overall in the tournament. The Maroons are coached by Denis Levesque of Hamilton, Meaghan Quennell of Oakville, and Wally Verschoor of Dundas.

The MVC 14U Black played up an age division and claimed the Bronze medal at the 15U Girls Challenge Cup-Trillium in Hamilton.

The 14U Blacks also finished first in their pool, defeating Oakville White, 14U 25-11, 25-6, and Hamilton Smash Teal, 25-11, 25-6. MVC 14U Black got past Guelph, 25-19, 25-11, in the quarter-finals and in the semi-finals, MVC 14U Black lost a close match to the Scorpions, 20-25, 26-24, 14-16. They then bounced back with a straight sets victory over KW Predators, 25-23, 25-9, to win the Bronze medal.

The MVC 15U team finished a strong fifth in the 15U Challenge Cup-Championship West in Windsor.

Finishing second in their pool, MVC 15U was defeated by London Volleyball Club, 25-22, 25-21, in quarter-final play and was determined to finish with a win over the Chatham Ballhawks, 25-21, 21-25, 15-7, to clinch fifth place and retain their spot in the Championship Division.

The MVC 15U team is coached by Larissa Puhach and Dan Byckalo of Burlington and Chantelle Weiler of Simcoe.

The MVC 17U and 18U teams travelled to the BNCC CanAm Tournament in Buffalo where the 17U team finished in third place in the Bronze Division and the 18U team placed fifth in the Gold Division. The MVC 17U team is coached by Denis Levesque, Meghan Schilthuis and Mike Hall of Hamilton. The MVC 18U team is coached by Ben Goerzen and Steve Bonazza of St. Catharines.
