Yellow Jackets remain undefeated this season


Four more wins over the weekend (Jan. 10-12) have extended the Blessed Sacrament Yellow Jackets U14 Girls basketball record to 19 games without a loss this season.

And that quartet of weekend victories also gave the Yellow Jackets their fourth gold medal in as many tournament outings, taking the championship of the Brantford CYO Basketball Tournament.

In giving her charges credit, coach Nancy Wilson-Blackey said the girls play a “very powerful focused game, exploiting other teams weaknesses. They have great court sense and move the ball fluidly in their offensive sets.

“Defensively, they are aggressive and anticipate the other teams movements allowing for many steals and forcing other teams to turn the ball over.”

Leading up to the final game Blessed Sacrament, opened with a 66-42 decision over Barrie Royals. Top scorers were Emma Holloway with 15, Hannah Temple with 12, and Natalie Vigna with 10.

In a 62-42 win over London Ramblers, Lauryn Bruzzese, Mikayla Dalipe and Vigna each had eight points to pace the victors.

Game 3 saw the Yellow Jackets edge out hometown rivals, Hamilton Transway #1, 49-41 Pacing the YJs were Vigna with 12, Temple with 10, and Holloway with six points.

The Gold Medal showdown was a 51-31 shootout over Brantford CYO, led by Brianne Tulk’s 10 point effort. Holloway dropped in another nine and Bruzzese counted seven.

The girls next games will be ABS League games at Sheridan College on Sunday, Jan. 26 against Niagara Falls Red Raiders and Etobicoke Thunder Basketball.
