Jason puts another notch in his buckle

Jason Buckle once again topped the 61kg weight class, and Nicole Roach claimed bronze in the 60kg division, as the Marauder wrestling teams competed at the Guelph Open on Saturday (Jan. 18). The tournament boasted many of the top wrestlers in the country and included several entrants from clubs in the United States.

Buckle‚Äôs win was his second in as many weeks. His seeding placed him in the upper bracket, where he easily disposed of the Alberta Golden Bears’ Dylan Williams, 12-1. Buckle met a second Bear in the gold-medal match, and staged a dramatic comeback to overcome Mike Asselstine. The veteran led until the final 20 seconds, when Buckle twice tilted Asselstine en route to a narrow 14-11 victory.

A veteran of the 86kg weight class, Kevin Barret had a strong outing. The Marauder benefitted from a forfeit in his first match, and blanked Calvin Daum of Saskatchewan in the second round before losing to Brock’s Ryan Cochrane in the third. Barret finished fifth in the division.

On the women’s side, Roach won one of three matches in the pool-format division, defeating York’s Lorraine Yeung 8-0 to offset losses to Brock’s Michelle Fazzari and Celeste Rodrigues of the Sudbury Wrestling Club.

Erica D’Angelo – in just her second tournament since returning from injury – placed fourth in the 55kg weight class on Saturday. The Marauder veteran opened the event with a 10-0 defeat of York’s Colleen Semple, before being beaten by Montreal’s Elizabeth Sera in the second round. She rebounded with a 10-0 victory over Regina’s Cassandra Schmidt in the consolation bracket, but was beaten by Anna McKee of the London West Wrestling Club in the bronze-medal match.

The Marauders continue their campaign in Kingston this coming weekend, as Queen’s will be host to both the Ontario Junior Championships on Saturday, and the Queen’s Open on Sunday. McMaster’s wrestlers aged 20 and under will compete on Saturday, while the remainder of the team will compete on Sunday.
