Medal producing efforts for Mountain Volleyball


The Mountain Volleyball Club’s 15U girls team played up an age division and won the Bronze medal at the 16U McGregor Cup tournament in Kitchener this past weekend (Jan. 25).

Finishing first in their pool, MVC 15U defeated the Scorpions, 18-25, 25-15, 15-10, and the KW Predators, 26-24, 21-25, 15-11. In the quarter-finals, MVC 15U moved ahead of Waterloo White, 25-4, 25-10, but lost to the MVC 16U in the semi-finals, 25-13, 25-13.

Recovering nicely, MVC 15U defeated the KW Predators, 25-11, 23-25, 15-5, to win the Bronze medal.

The team is coached by Larissa Puhach and Dan Byckalo of Burlington and Chantelle Weiler of Simcoe. Players include Melina Weiler of Simcoe, Catherine Gracey of Dundas, Grace Laurat of Ancaster, Meredith Elstone of Hamilton, Morgan Randall of Burlington, Nicole Dragus of Stoney Creek, Rachel Dickenson of Carlisle, Kate Keeting, Ashleigh Reigel, and Marija Cvetkova, all of Milton, and Ainsleigh Williams of Mount Hope.

A Bronze medal was also claimed by the MVC 14U Maroon team at the 14U McGregor Cup-Trillium C held in Hamilton.

The Maroons finished first in their pool, defeating Selects 00, 25-12, 25-13, and Toronto West, 25-9, 25-11. In quarter-final action, MVC 14U clipped the EVP Eagles, 25-10, 25-14.

In the semi-finals, the team lost a close three-set match to the E381 Blues but bounced back to take a straight sets match against Hamilton Smash (25-13, 25-10) for the Bronze.

The MVC 14U Maroon team is coached by Jerry Olejarz of Dundas, Kelly Entwistle of Ancaster, and Mike Smith of Hamilton. Players are Brianna Quijano, Meaghan Boatsmith, and Kaitlin Johnny, all of Hamilton, Lauryn D’Aurora of Stoney Creek, Shaelyn Francis of Glanbrook, Victoria Fisher,Zofia Olejarz, and Zoë Lawrence, all of Dundas, and Jamie Mataseje, Paige Enwistle, Jaiya Morphet, and Rae Delsey, all of Ancaster.
