Blyth Academy Bruins crowned Junior Prospects hockey champs


Blyth BruinsThe Blyth Academy Bruins of Burlngton capped off their season by winning the recent National Junior Prospects Hockey League championship in the Under-18 Major Midget division.

The team finished the regular season in first place in the West division and second overall in the full league standings with a 16-3 record.

To reach the championship, played in Rochester, N.Y., the Bruins faced North Broward Prep from Florida in the quarter-finals. James Thorpe led the charge with two goals with singles going to Ben Morris and Filip Dusek in the 4-2 victory.

Dave Kiss was prominent in the game and recorded three assists.

In the semi- finals, the Bruins eliminated the Lansing Senators from Michigan, 4-3, in a come-from-behind effort. Goal scorers included Morris, Jacob Ovens, Dylan Cancilla and Dom Procopio, with the game winner.

That victory put the Bruins into the best-of-three final series against the Utah Grizzlies from Salt Lake City.

The opener went into double overtime after neither team could break a 4-4 stalemate. The Bruins controlled the play for most of the first overtime but failed to capitalize on their chances. Hard work by centre Morris created the scoring play for Procopio two minutes into the second OT period.

Other goal scorers included Morris, Cancilla, Matt Doyle, and Drake Bailey.

In the second game of the final, the teams were scoreless late into the second period before Dave Kiss tallied on a screen shot from the point.

The game remained 1-0 until the 10 minute mark of the third period when the Bruins erupted with four unanswered goals to emerge 5-0 champions.

In addition to Kiss, goals scorers were Thorpe, with 2 goals, Morris and Ovens.

John Jefferies had the shutout.

Procopio was named to the league’s All Star game in mid-April.

The Bruins next major event will be their Czech Republic hockey tour in March.
