The Mohawk women’s team scored three in the first end and five in the fourth and routed St. Clair 10-1 in five ends at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Curling Championships in Sault Ste. Marie Thursday (Feb. 13).
Mohawk, skipped by Kendall Haymes evened its record at 1-1. Mohawk lost a fairly close decision in their opener, a 9-6 decision to Fanshawe Falcons in the opening draw.
The Mountaineers scored two in the first end, but the Falcons responded with three in the second end. They also had a three-ender in the fourth. Mohawk matched that in the sixth as the rinks battled back and forth.
Logan James’ Mohawk men’s team was also 1-1 on day one. The Mountaineers lost their opener to host Sault College, 12-4, but then topped Fleming 7-5.
The Fleming game was a see-saw battle with Mohawk scoring two in the seventh end for a 7-5 triumph. That left both rinks with 1-1 records.
The Mountaineer will play Humber Friday morning.
The Mohawk mixed team, skipped by Wes Steen won its only game of the day, 7-3 over the Sault.
Steen’s rink broke open a one-point game scoring three in the sixth end and were on their way victory. The Mountaineer foursome got off to a very good start, scoring singles in each of the first four ends, but the Sault cut the deficit in half, scoring two in the fifth end.
Steen’s mixed is back inaction Friday morning when they play Algonquin of Ottawa.
Play Friday at the Soo Curlers Club gets going at 8:00 am as the Mohawk women play Humber. The men resume at 8:30 am, also against Humber. The next game for the mixed rink will be at 11:15 am.
The event continues until Sunday.
