Mohawk women takes home Silver in OCAA curling


The Mohawk women’s team captured the Silver medal at the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Curling Championships in Sault Ste. Marie on Sunday (Feb. 16). The Mountaineers dropped a 7-4 decision to London’s Fanshawe in the Gold medal match at the Soo Curlers Club.

After a blanked first end, Fanshawe scored three in the second. They stole a single in the third, but Mohawk came back with one in the fourth end and stole one in the fifth. The Falcons then counted two in the sixth, but the Mountaineers matched that with a deuce in the seventh end. Fanshawe scored a single in the eighth and final end for the victory.

In Mohawk’s semi-final game, the Mountaineers downed the host Sault College Cougars 7-4. The Sault opened scoring with a single in the first end, but Haymes’ rink responded with three in the second end and stole one in the third. The Cougars got back to within one point with a deuce in the fourth end, but Mohawk scored two in the fifth and stole a point in the sixth. The Sault got a single in the seventh, but that ended the scoring.

Members of the Mohawk women’s rink are skip Kendall Haymes (Welland), vice Avery Thomas (Grimsby), second Nikki Steep (Clinton), lead Allison Vail (Sarnia), and spare Jennie Vittie (Wainfleet).

Host Sault College won the men’s Gold, 5-4, over Humber.

Humber took the mixed title, 8-2, over Niagara.
