Second period Rampage sinks Bulldogs


bulldogsThree unanswered second period goals by the San Antonio Rampage gave them a 4-1 American Hockey League win over the host Hamilton Bulldogs at FirstOntario Centre on Monday (Feb. 17) afternoon.

Rampage defenceman Colby Robak got his team on the board first with a big slap shot from the point on the power play at 9:16 of the opening period.

Bulldogs forward Patrick Holland tied the game 1-1 with his fifth goal of the season when he redirected a pass from forward Martin St. Pierre past Rampage goaltender Jacob Markstrom with just over a minute to play in the first frame.

San Antonio forward Drew Shore made it 2-1 just 23 seconds into the second period when he batted a rebound out of mid-air and past Hamilton goaltender Robert Mayer.

Less than two minutes later, Rampage defenceman Dylan Olsen fired a wrist shot through a screen and past Mayer to put San Antonio ahead 3-1.

Despite out-shooting the Rampage 16-7 in the final frame, the ‘Dogs couldn’t close the gap before San Antonio forward Vincent Trocheck potted an empty netter to make it a 4-1 game with 1:36 to go.

Mayer made 26 saves on 29 shots in the Bulldogs net while Markstrom made 30 saves on 31.

Hamilton went 0-for-4 on the power play, while San Antonio went 1-for-1.

Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Friday (Feb. 21) when the ‘Dogs will host the Binghamton Senators (AHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators) at Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. The Bulldogs will return to FirstOntario Centre on Sunday, Feb. 23 when they welcome back the San Antonio Rampage (AHL affiliate of the Florida Panthers) at 3:00 p.m.
