The McMaster Marauders Pita Pit Athletes of the Week are Jason Buckle, of the men’s wrestling team, and Joanna Jedrzejewska, of the women’s volleyball team.
Jedrzejewska, a first-year outside hitter from Hamilton, saved her best performance to date for the biggest occasion of her young career. She exploded for 23.5 points on Saturday (Feb. 15), converting 21 of 39 hitting attempts against just five errors (41 per cent), to lead the Marauders past the Windsor Lancers 3-1 in an Ontario University Athletics quarter-final.
She added two aces and a half block in the win, setting a career-high point total in the process. Her effort was front and centre as McMaster reached the Final Four for the first time since 2010.
Buckle has now competed in three OUA wrestling championships and has taken home a title from each. Named OUA’s Rookie of the Year in 2012 and Outstanding Male Wrestler in 2013, Buckle followed with a gold-medal-winning performance in the 61kg weight class on Saturday.
It was the Marauders’ only gold medal of the championships, and one of four medals of any colour taken home by the McMaster men, who captured bronze in the overall team standings.
