Hamilton’s Osvald Nitski won gold medals in Saturday’s (Feb. 15) first two finals at the Speedo Eastern Canadian Swimming Championships.
Nitski, competing in the men’s 16 and under age group, took the 400-m freestyle and followed shortly with another victory in the 100-metre butterfly. It was the 16-year-old’s second and third gold medals of the competition.
Matt Swanston of Newmarket, Ont., also won three gold medals completing a sweep of three backstroke events in the 17 and over division including Saturday’s 200-metre race. He won the 50-m backstroke on Friday and the 100-m backstroke on Thursday.
On the women’s side, Danika Huizinga of Ajax, Ont., collected her third gold winning the 15 and under women’s 100-metre butterfly. The 14-year-old clocked 59.09 to break the 13-14 national age group short course record of 59.32 set by national team member Noemie Thomas in 2010.
Danielle Hanus of Newmarket is keeping pace with Huizinga following a third victory this week in the 200-m backstroke.
