St. Mary Catholic Secondary School graduate Christian Brennan has become the Canadian junior record holder on the track over 400 metres.

The speedster from Waterdown, who currently attends the University of Oregon, ran the distance in 53.83 seconds on Valentine’s Day weekend in New Mexico.

The previous Canadian mark of 53.91 was set by Sage Watson in 2012.

For four consecutive years beginning in 2010, Brennan won championships at meets run by the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations. She broke four OFSAA age-group records in the 100, 200 and 400 metres. In total, Brennan won eight gold and two silver medals at provincial high school finals.

When she was only 15, Brennan captured a bronze medal in the 200m against Canada’s fastest senior women at the national championships in Toronto. She has also competed internationally for Canada.
