Dundas golfer Mackenzie Hughes is the 2013 Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year. The announcement was made at the 29th Annual CYO Celebrity Dinner and Children’s Fundraiser, at the Hamilton Convention Centre on Thursday (Feb. 27).
Hughes finished atop PGA Tour Canada’s Order of Merit with more than $52,0000 in earnings and was selected Canadian Player of the Year. He also earned exempt status on the web.com tour for 2014.
At just 23 years of age, Hughes played in both the Canadian Open and the U.S. Open.
Other finalists for the Bill Sturrup Award were 17-year-old basketball star Kia Nurse, of Hamilton (a member of the Canadian national women’s team) and running back Mercer Timmis, of Burlington. He was the Canada West MVP from the Vanier Cup finalist Calgary Dinos.
