Mohawk men take step closer to basketball final

Although the game was tight through much of the first 20 minutes, Mohawk began to wrestle control of the momentum from the Fanshawe Falcons late in the half and would use a big second half en route to a 99-52 victory that pushed the Mountaineers into the semi-final of the 2014 belairdirect National Fitness Ontario Colleges Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Championship at Sheridan College.

Matt Fennell scored a game-high 21 points for the Mountaineers on Thursday (Feb. 27), while Andrew Cicuttini chipped in 20 points and 15 boards. Alex Reis also hit double figures with 19.

Bryan McDonald led Fanshawe with 15, while Chavaun Miller-Bennett also hit double digits with 14.

In other quarter-final play, Algonquin defeated Durham, 89-70, Humber stung Seneca, 71-53, and host Sheridan needed overtime to down George Brown, 99-89.

Friday, in bronze medal quarter-final action Durham will play Seneca at 1 p.m., followed by Fanshawe against George Brown at 3 p.m. Algonquin will meet Humber at 6 p.m. in the championship semi-finals. Mohawk meets Sheridan in the other semi at 8 p.m.

The championship runs until Saturday evening.
