A three point effort – two goals and an assist – from Mike Blunden carried the Hamilton Bulldogs to a 5-2 American Hockey League win over the Marlies on Saturday afternoon (March 1) at Toronto.

The win was Hamilton’s third in a row.

Bulldogs forward Gabriel Dumont opened the scoring at 6:34 of the first period with his team co-leading 14th goal of the season. About 10 minutes later Marlies defenceman Stuart Percy tied the game when his point shot was inadvertently deflected by Dumont past goaltender Robert Mayer.

Just under six minutes into the second period, Blunden tipped home a point shot by defenceman Greg Pateryn for his 12th goal of the season to give Hamilton a 2-1 lead.

Four minutes later, Hamilton forward Maxime Macenauer took the puck around the Toronto goal, then fed a pass to Sven Andrighetto, who fired home his 14th goal of the season to put the ‘Dogs ahead 3-1.

Less than three minutes later, Toronto forward Jerry D’Amigo was credited with a goal that trickled past Mayer to cut Hamilton’s lead to 3-2.

With three seconds to go in the second period, ‘Dogs forward Justin Courtnall potted his fifth goal of the season to restore Hamilton’s two goal edge.

At 4:11 of the third period, Blunden scored his 13th of the season.

Mayer made 29 saves on 31 shots in the Bulldogs net in the win. Drew MacIntyre made 28 saves on 33 shots for the Marlies in the loss.

Both teams went 0-for-4 on the power play.

Hamilton’s next game is scheduled for Friday (March 7) when the ‘Dogs will host the Oklahoma City Barons at FirstOntario Centre at 7:30 p.m.
