The McMaster Marauders Pita Pit Athletes of the Week are Leon Alexander of the men’s basketball team and Erica D’Angelo of the women’s wrestling team.
Alexander saved his best performance of his rookie season in Maroon and Grey for the most crucial moment. The forward, who transferred to McMaster this season, was named Player of the Game as the Marauders staged a dramatic comeback to beat the Windsor Lancers, 93-89, in the Ontario University Athletics bronze medal game .
That win gave the Marauders a trip to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport Final 8. Alexander had a career-high 21 points in the win, but was equally valuable on the defensive end, and contributed seven rebounds and a team-high five steals.
The veteran D’Angelo competed well at her final CIS meet, finishing fourth in the women’s 55kg weight class at the national championships at the University of New Brunswick.
It was the best finish for a McMaster woman at the event, as the Marauders finished 10th as a team. D’Angelo’s performance on the national stage was particularly impressive given her return from injury just months earlier forcing her to miss the first half of McMaster’s competitive schedule.
She advanced to the bronze medal match in her division, before being bested by Calgary’s Cara Nania to narrowly miss the podium.
