Burlington native Amanda Smith is this week’s winner of the Pioneer Energy Ontario University Athletics Female Athlete of the Week for the period ending March 2.
Smith, a goalie for the Laurier Golden Hawks women’s hockey team, posted back-to-back shutouts to help lead the No. 4 Golden Hawks to their 11th OUA championship this past week. The first year psychology major stopped all 77 shots she faced over the final two games of the best-of-three series as the Hawks won a pair of 2-0 games over the No. 8 Queen’s Gaels to capture their second banner in the last three years.
After allowing two goals on 23 shots in an overtime loss in Game 1, she put on a goaltending clinic to close out the series. In Game 2 on the road facing elimination, she stopped all 39 shots sent her way and followed that up with a 38-save shutout in the series finale back at home.
Smith ended up posting a 0.94 goals against average and a 0.980 save percentage in the championship series to take home championship MVP honours.
The male award went to Johnny Berhanemeskel of the Ottawa Gee-Gees basketball team.
