Hamilton Skating Club’s Lam wins Bronze at Winter Games

Alistair Lam won the Bronze medal in the Pre-Novice Men’s category with a personal best short program and overall total score at the recently concluded Ontario Winter Games. The Games were Lam’s second appearance at the provincial event games – he competed in 2012 edition Games in the Juvenile Men’s category (4th). Alistair is also the Section Champion.

In their first year competing together, Felicia Bonitatibus and Matthew Korkoian competed in the Pre-Novice Dance category and finished their season with a fourth overall placement. Felicia and Matthew are also the Section Silver Medalists.

Alistair, Felicia and Matthew qualified for OWG at the Skate Canada Western Ontario 2014 Sectionals in November 2013.

The OWG is the largest multi-sport event in Ontario which has been held annually since 1970 and has over 3,500 participants (athletes, coaches and officials) in 27 different sports. The purpose is to provide young athletes with development and competitive opportunities and is an integral component of athlete development in Ontario, it also prepares them for competition on the national and international stage.

This year, the events were held in the Muskoka region with the skating events at the Rotary Place in Orillia.

In other Hamilton Skating Club events, Elizabeth DeJong is Junior Silver STARSkate champion after qualifying for her first provincials. Megan Bishop competed in Senior Silver STARSkate and came home with the Bronze Medal. She has qualified for her second provincials after competing last year in Junior Silver STARSkate.

This recent meet was a qualifying competition for the Junior Bronze STARSkate and higher categories for the Skate Ontario STARSkate Championships (provincials) being held in Wellington, March 15 – 16.

Pass the Torch

The club’s ice show, Pass the Torch, will be held Sat. April 5. Special guests include Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier, National Team Ice Dance members. Their recent accomplishments include a Silver Medal at the 2014 Four Continents Figure Skating Championships, 2013 National Silver Medalists and have been named to the 2014 World Figure Skating Championships being held Saitama, Japan March 24 – 30.

Also on hand will be 14-year-old Roman Sadovsky, who finished eighth in the Senior Men’s competition this season –competing with the likes of 2014 Olympians Patrick Chan and Kevin Reynolds.

Roman is competing at the 2014 Junior World Figure Skating Championships being held in Sofia, Bulgaria March 10 – 15.

Close to 300 skaters, including the club’s PreSchool, PreCanSkate, CanSkate, STARSkate, Competitive, and Adult Skaters will be participating. There will be two presentations, one at 1 p.m. and one at 7 p.m.

Admission is $15 at the Dave Andreychuck Mountain Arena and Skating Centre, 25 Hester St.
